Model answer
The table illustrates the total population in three cities in 1990 and 2000 compared with the projected figures for 2000.
Overall, Sao Paula was always the most populous city among those places. While the population figures in Sao Paula and Jakarta increased after a decade, Shanghai experienced the opposite trend. The actual numbers in 2000 were significantly lower than those predicted in 1990.
in 1990, 15 million residents lived in Sao Paulo, compared to 13.6 and 9.5 million dwellers in Shanghai and Jakarta, respectively.
The population in Sao Paulo was projected to reach 24 million in 2000, but the actual figure was considerably lower, at only 18 million. Similarly, Jakarta was forecast to be the home to 14 million citizens but the real figure in 2000 was only 11.5 million. Despite being estimated in 1990 to increase to 17 million, the population of Shanghai surprisingly fell by 1 million to 12.5 over a ten-year period.
